Three Not-to-Miss November Events in Durango, Colorado
With the arrival of Thanksgiving and Christmas just around the bend, the community of Durango is brimming over with the spirit of giving, hopes of receiving and feelings of peace and joy. These three November events in Durango, Colorado are ideal for families and friends looking to embrace the season with some fun and frolic.
Polar Express Train—November 15 - January 2
The classic children's tale, The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg, has stimulated imaginations and brought holiday joy to readers for decades. Brought to the big screen in 2003 as a feature film, The Polar Express Train comes alive with all the favorite characters from this beloved Christmas Eve story right aboard the Durango Narrow Gauge Railroad, located at 479 Main Ave, Durango, CO. As the train travels to and from the North Pole, Billy, Hero Boy and Santa along with his elves will make appearances much to the delight of passengers.
Personal chefs will serve guests treats and hot cocoa while reading The Polar Express and partaking in caroling. The jolly one will make private visits to each car for photo opportunities and chances to let the little ones make those all-important Christmas wish lists known. As a surprise, every child will get a very special gift from Santa upon disembarking the train.
Departing at 5:15 p.m., the train runs for six weeks from November 15 through January 2, 2020, and tickets will sell quickly—especially for deluxe and first-class cabins and seats. Deluxe accommodations allow parties to face each other and includes a souvenir mug, while first class also includes additional amenities, including themed holiday decor in their car.
Thanksgiving Farmers Market—November 23
While the primary farmer's market is gone for the season, November 23 sees the resurgence of local farmers and vendors between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. for a special Thanksgiving Farmers Market. Head to the La Plata Fairgrounds at 2500 Main Ave in Durango, CO for this one-day event where there will be incredible selections of locally harvested and produced veggies, meats and cheeses to help chefs create the perfect holiday meal. Of course, there will be plenty of local crafts and art works alongside clothing, wares and other goods, which just might help one wrap up their holiday shopping earlier than usual.
The Durango Thanksgiving Farmers Market is pleased to announce they are participants in the SNAP program, and those with cards can stop into the information booth to receive vouchers and their Double Up Food Bucks. This entitles spenders to get double the food with their EBT benefits up to $20 per day!
Singing With Santa—November 29
Durango officially kicks off the holiday season with the annual Singing with Santa event in downtown from 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Everyone meets up at the TBK Bank parking lot (259 W. 9th Street, Durango, CO) to get organized, and then the festivities move across town as attendees sing carols marching down Main Avenue. Santa will be traveling with the group all the way to Buckley Park for the annual lighting of the Community Christmas Tree.
Hot chocolate and yummy cookies will be served until they're gone, and photos with Santa are available—just bring your own camera. The first 1000 kiddos at the event will get free glow sticks, and those ages 4-10 can enter the official coloring contest on the Singing with Santa website to win the right to ride in Santa's stagecoach during the ride to Buckley Park!
