Where to Take Your Dog Hiking in La Plata County, Colorado
The neighborhoods in the Durango area are fantastic places to get out and explore, and that extends to our four-legged family members too! In fact, as one of the dog-friendliest cities in all of Colorado, there are thousands of miles of pet-friendly hiking trails around La Plata County, Colorado just waiting to be explored. From the Colorado Trail to Vallecito Lake and the Horse Gulch Trail System, the region is packed with people and pet-friendly trails near homes for sale as well as experiences that are both fun and scenic all year long.
But perhaps what makes living in Durango so special is that visitors and locals alike don’t necessarily have to elapse to the deep wilderness to enjoy a little outdoor recreation. Along with the miles upon miles of hiking trails surrounding the Durango areas there are also plenty of great spots to enjoy right here in the city too.
Most notably is the one-and-only Animas River Trail, which follows along the river, over bridges and through parks for about five miles. Hikers and their four-legged companions can enter the trail on the north end near the City Market grocery or on the south side near Durango Mall, but keep in mind though, Durango leash laws are always in effect within city limits.
If you’re looking for a place to let Fido run around and stretch his legs, though, dogs are allowed to be off the leash in the Durango Dog Park. While not exactly a hike, the park does offer up five-acres of land for pets to play, roam and run, which is more than enough space for any dog, no matter the size or the breed. Other popular spots for taking your dog include Weminuche Wilderness Area and San Juan National Forest, which of course provide all the space you need as well to get out and enjoy an afternoon with man’s best friend!
