  • Popular commercial center, competing with neighboring Durango and Farmington, NM, to the south.
  • The Cortez Recreation Center, operated by the Cortez Parks & Recreation Department, offers many ways to stay active.

Cortez Community Amenities

The community of Cortez has a strong tourist economy largely in part to its proximity to the neighboring Mesa Verde National Park, the Four Corners monument, and Monument Valley, which is in close distance to the Navajo Nation. Mesa Verde was once home to the Ancestral Pueblo from 600-1300 AD. Tourists and locals living here alike may join one of the daily summer tours to view the homes built on the sides of cliffs.

The Cortez Recreation Center is a 46,000-square-foot space offers dozens of activities for residents to exercise and socialize. A 50-meter swimming pool, racquetball courts, and a climbing wall are just a few of the things that will keep locals in shape year-round. For those who want some outdoor water recreation like fishing and water sports, the Totten Reservoir and McPhee Reservoir are highly accessible from this community.

Many local businesses have been in the community for a long time, including Slavins True Value and Keetch Motors. One of the latest additions to the area is Kinder Morgan and their CO2 plant which transports CO2 via pipeline all the way to Texas.

Homeowners in the area may also head south on Highway 160 to Towaoc and try their luck on the slot machines at Ute Mountain Casino, Hotel and Resort. The hour-and-a-half drive to neighboring Farmington will take shoppers to the big city for their shopping fix.

Cortez School Information

Residents in Cortez homes typically attend schools in the Montezuma-Cortez School District. The district has a preschool, four elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. The 35-acre Montezuma/Cortez High School is the most recent addition, opening its doors in 2015. There are also three charter schools available. For higher education, Pueblo Community College Southwest is about 15 minutes away.
