It's hard to imagine that this far southwest buyers could find water recreation as prominent as it is. But the Totten Reservoir and McPhee Reservoir are highly accessible from this community... one tour is all it takes and buyers can easily imagine the recreational possibilities. Cortez Community Amenities

The community of Cortez has a strong tourist economy largely in part to its proximity to the neighboring Mesa Verde National Park, the Four Corners monument and Monument Valley which is in close distance to the Navajo Nation. Mesa Verde, which could quite possibly be the most astounding piece of community history in Colorado, was once home to the Ancestral Pueblo for 600-1300 AD. Tourists and locals living here alike may join one of the daily summer tours to view the homes built in the sides of cliffs (cliff dwellings).

Homeowners in the area may also head south on Highway 160 to Towaoc and try your luck on the slot machines at Ute Mountain Casino, Hotel and Resort. The quick hour and a half drive to neighboring Farmington will take shoppers to the big city for their shopping fix.

The Rec Center here displays a perfect sense of the community coming together to build a major asset to the town. A 50-meter swimming pool, racquetball courts and a climbing wall are just a few of the things that will keep locals in shape year-round.

During your average winter months residemts will see a little less snow and a bit more sunshine than most of the Southwest Colorado communities. If those who tour the area leave a snowstorm in Durango, they'll likely to run into rain or even sunshine here, though they are only 40 minutes away.

Many local businesses have been in the community for a long time. Slavins True Value, Keetch Motors and Bru's House of Color have made these neighborhoods a permanent home. One of the latest additions to the area is Kinder Morgan and their CO2 plant which transports CO2 via pipeline, all the way to Texas.

Cortez School Information

The newest addition to this blue collar community is the Montezuma/Cortez High School. Long overdue, many of the towns elder residents were always amazed that their grandchildren were attending the same high school they went to years back. Located on the east side of town on 35 acres, the high school will have all the new bells and whistles to prepare its students for the future.
