Just over the hill, west on Highway 160, buyers will find the best views of the La Plata Mountains. And just a short 15-minute drive from downtown Durango, with fast access to the La Plata Mountains, those who tour the area will find Hesperus, Colorado. A few miles south of Hesperus was the original property site of Fort Lewis College. Real estate in the area includes some of the most exclusive luxury house on the market, with large plots of land and 360-degree views. The housing market also boasts modest farm and ranch properties that are located along County Road 140.

Hay Gulch is a hidden area just south of town over La Plata Creek. Properties in this area are mainly off the back side of Hesperus Ski Area. Some of these homes even have coal mine sites right on their property!

As far as coal mines, further down the road in Hay Gulch tourists will find Iron King Mine, a coal mine that provides cement throughout the US and Mexico. Iron King Mine is hidden and many don't even know of its existence.

La Plata Mountains
